This series of NIST traceable size standards provides an accurate and convenient method for calibrating or checking the performance of laser particle counters used in cleanrooms and other contamination monitoring applications. The products are suspensions of monodisperse polystyrene spheres (PSL) for use in airborne or liquid particle dispersion systems. They are available in a range of sizes from 0.1 to 100µm in diameter.
The particles are prepared as low residue aqueous suspensions for minimal background interference, packaged in 15mL dropper-tipped vials. The particle diameters are calibrated by electron or optical microscopy. Each package includes a Certificate of Calibration and Traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
In comparison with the well established 3000 and 4000 Series products described elsewhere, these product lines are precisely diluted for immediate use in laser particle counters with minimal time-consuming adjustments of concentration.

Description

Particle Count Controls are suspensions of (NIST traceable) particles with closely defined counts per ml. They can be used for the monitoring of liquid particle counters in contamination control applications, for instance in semiconductor cleanrooms.
Part of this product line are the 3K4K series, the Pharm-Trol™, Ezy-Cal™ and Count-Cal™ series by Thermo Scientific; and the PharmaCount™ series by Applied Microspheres. These particle count controls are designed to facilitate the control of liquid particle counters in pharmaceutical QC laboratories that need to comply with US, European, Japanese or Korean Pharmacopeia regulations. Part of the PharmaCount™ series is a set of instrument specific controls for the easy calibration of Accusizer instruments, which are commonly used in this environment.

Instruments using this principle for particle sizing and counting look at the cross section/shadow of the individual particles. Liquid borne particle samples are analyzed using a photodetector and laser diode. As the particles pass singly between the photodetector and laser diode, there is a voltage drop that can be correlated to a standard calibration curve. This method is normally used for particle counting methods in the 2-100µm size range.
