The microspheres are made from cross-linked polystyrene divinylbenzene (PSDVB) copolymer and can be stored at room temperature. They can be dispersed in aqueous media with the aid of a small amount of surfactant, or in lower alcohols, such as methanol and ethanol. Some dye extraction will result when the particles are suspended in pure alcohols, but will be minimal. Other organic solvents, such as ethers or chlorinated hydrocarbons, should be avoided because they will swell the particles and completely extract the dye. Chromosphere T product include a Certificate of Calbration and Traceability.

Description

The purpose of a coloured or fluorescently dyed particle is its visibility with the naked eye or by a detector. By adding a dye to the particle it reduces signal to noise due to the contrast between the particle and its environment. Applications for these particles are countless. By modifying the surface of the particles, antibodies or proteins can be conjugated to their surfaces, making them ideally suited for diagnostic assay development, for instance for lateral flow assay development. Polymer microspheres like the Chromospheres are ideally suited for this application, because they are dyed with deeply colored red or black dyes. The intense colors result in very high contrast and visibility relative to most backgrounds. They are available as dry powders and can easily be suspended in aqueous media if desired. The diameters of ChromoSphere-T Certified Size Standards are traceable to the standard meter through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and are calibrated by optical microscopy.
